Elbows out

2021 BRSCC Mazda MX-5 SuperCup.
Round 6, Donington Park Grand Prix Circuit.

We headed to Donington Park for round 6 of the BRSCC Mazda MX-5 SuperCup, to take on the full Grand Prix circuit.

I made my second team change of the year, moving on to run with my Club Enduro teammate Alex Miller for the first time. There was more work to do ourselves, but it was very enjoyable being with him and Charlotte, plus Fraser from BLiNK was based with us the entire time too.

Track limits were a bit of a hot topic – specifically how much cutting you could do and get away with, mainly at the chicane. With that in mind we all headed out for qualifying, where I finished up 6th, just a shade away from 4th.

There was a large shunt at the start of race one; I got away with just a trip through the gravel. The race was restarted and shortened and was a pretty unremarkable one for me as I finished up 7th.

Race two was one of the one of the best races I’ve driven in SuperCup. I was in a race long fight for third with Patrick Fletcher, Adam Bessell and James Cossins. It was very close but there was a lot of respect and in the end I finished 4th.

In race three I was running up in 4th again, but Sam Smith passed me out of the Old Hairpin and took two other cars with him. After a safety car I was in a tough and physical area of the pack. There was some very ‘elbows out’ driving for the rest of the race and I crossed the line 8th, feeling pretty angry with myself. Room for improvement.

Other than being pretty disappointed with that last race, I was happy with race two and also to have Fraser around again.

We head to Oulton Park next for the final round of Club Enduro, where we have already secured the class C honours. Looking forward to it!
